What Is a Cervical Pillow?
Cervical pillows put height under the neck rather than the head. That is the whole idea.

Short answer
A cervical pillow is a shaped pillow with a raised area designed to sit under the curve of your neck and a lower area for the back of your head. The shape aims to support the neck's natural curve instead of letting it flatten or bend. It is a design category, not a medical device, and buying one is not treatment.
Common shapes
| Shape | Typical design | Usually aimed at |
|---|---|---|
| Contour / butterfly | Two raised edges with a central dip | Back and side sleepers |
| Cervical roll | A cylindrical roll placed under the neck | Back sleepers, short-term use |
| Wave | A continuous curved surface | Back sleepers |
| Shoulder-cutout | Contour with recesses at the sides | Side sleepers |
What to expect, and what not to
A well-fitted cervical pillow can feel more supportive and reduce the sense of your head being propped or dropped. It is not a treatment for neck pain, disc problems, headaches or sleep apnea, and no consumer pillow should be sold to you as one. If you have persistent symptoms, get them assessed rather than shopping for a fix.
What to check before buying
- The height of both the neck ridge and head recess.
- Whether the shape works for your main and secondary positions.
- Whether the foam or fill can be adjusted.
- Whether the return terms allow a genuine at-home fit check.
