Choosing a Pillow as a Side Sleeper
Side sleeping is the position most sensitive to getting pillow height wrong.

Short answer
Side sleepers usually need a medium-to-high loft pillow that keeps its height under load, because the pillow has to fill the distance from the outside of the shoulder to the side of the head. Broader shoulders need more loft; adjustable shredded-fill pillows are the easiest way to hit the right height.
Why shoulder width decides it
Lying on your side, the mattress supports your shoulder, and everything above it is a gap the pillow must fill. The wider your shoulders and the firmer your mattress, the bigger that gap. This is why a pillow one person calls perfect feels far too low to someone else.
Pillow types that tend to work
- Adjustable shredded memory foam or latex — you can tune the height precisely.
- Firm solid foam with sufficient loft — consistent support, but you cannot adjust it.
- Contoured pillows with shoulder cutouts — helpful if you tuck an arm up.
- Soft fibre pillows — usually collapse too far to hold side-sleeping height.
Side-sleeper checklist
- Estimate the shoulder-to-head gap on your usual mattress.
- Check how much the pillow compresses under your head, not only its unloaded height.
- Look for adjustable loft if you are between sizes or change positions.
- Make sure your neck feels neutral rather than tilted toward or away from the mattress.
