Why the wings exist

Side sleepers often tuck an arm up beside their head, which pushes an ordinary pillow away and reduces support. The recesses give the arm space without displacing the pillow. For back sleepers, the higher outer sections can also stop the head rolling sideways.

Getting the fit right

• Check the loft of the raised sections, not just the centre.
• Make sure the cutouts are actually wide enough for your shoulder or arm.
• Use a closely fitting case; a loose one bridges the recesses and cancels them out.

Butterfly versus contour pillows

Every butterfly pillow is a type of contour pillow, but not every contour pillow has side wings or cutouts. Choose the butterfly variation only if the extra shoulder or arm space solves a real problem for the way you sleep; otherwise a simpler contour is easier to case and move across.

Fit checklist

• Measure the centre and outer loft, not only the overall height.
• Check whether both sides are usable if you turn often.
• Confirm the case follows the shape without pulling tight across the recess.
• Choose adjustable fill instead if you cannot estimate the loft you need.
